Well, it has been a while since you have heard from me, but resort business is keeping me busy. I have managed to get out on the lake the last several days. 3 days ago, Jordan and I headed down to the dam area to see if we could hook into a striper or two. No success at all. I have decided to switch gears the last two mornings and have started to walleye fish. Yesterday morning I went out on my own and started trolling Flicker Minnows on a big rounded main lake point. I trolled for 1.5 hours, landed 6 walleye and lost one during the fight. I also picked up several white bass and 2 big fat spotted bass. I was using one size 9 and one size 7 bait. Size #9 in a purple color caught the majority of fish either because it goes deeper than the #7 or the color. This morning Jordan decided to wake up and go out with me. We had fun and she got to land 6 walleye, 3 nice keeper size fish. I trolled a purple size 9 and a sexy shad size 9 Flicker Minnow. Both baits were getting hit. We started fishing on a large flat and landed 2 short walleye, then I moved to the point where I fished yesterday. I was keeping my boat in 28 to 35 feet of water and moving slowly at 1.4mph. I troll with my trolling motor. I am using the 50/50 rule. I cast the bait out 50 feet, then place a one-ounce snap weight on the line then let out 50 more feet of line. My bait was getting down to 30 – 33 feet deep with the size 9 Flicker Minnows. I use 8 pound test green monofilament line.
The lake surface temp was about 84 degrees this morning on the main lake and creeks. The water level has risen a little over a foot and sits at 561.13 ft msl. We got lucky as Beryl did not dump as much rain on us as it could have. There is a thermocline formed around 25 to 30 feet deep. The water is clear on the main lake and slightly stained in the creeks.
Hummingbird Hideaway Resort has a few cabins available during the remainder of July. Give us a call for details if you are looking for a great place for a family vacation or just a quiet get away on the lake. Call at 870-492-5113. Fishing is good this time of year for most species of fish. Along with catching striped bass, the large mouth are still sporadically surfacing back in the creeks and coves. The crappie are biting and the walleye bite is getting good.
